On 16 February 2013, UEM Builders Berhad once again achieved another significant milestone when it completed the installation of final approach span for the Second Penang Bridge, 106 days ahead of schedule.

The completion of the span has allowed construction vehicles from the land connection at Batu Kawan to commute to the main navigation span of the bridge towards Batu Maung. Ultimately, construction vehicles will be able to get across the bridge from one end to another for a total distance of 16.9 km upon a completion of the main navigation span scheduled to be in April 2013.

An event was held on the deck of the Second Penang Bridge recently to commemorate the completion of the last approach span closure. Present at the event were Rahim Goon, Deputy Director General Business of Malaysian Highway Authority, Abdul Kadir Md Kassim, Chairman of UEM Builders Berhad, Dato’ Ir. Dr. Ismail Mohamed Taib, Managing Director of Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd, Mohd Razin Ghazali, Managing Director of UEM Builders Berhad, Board of Directors of UEM Builders Berhad, representatives from Department of Occupational Safety & Health and Department of Environment.

One of the major components of the construction of the Second Penang Bridge comprises of precast Segmental Box Guiders (SBG) which were produced at UEM Builders’ project site casting yard factory. Once completed each SBG will be sent to the bridge deck by barge and lifted using segment launching gantries to form the bridge deck. Launching and erection of the SBGs were done span by span.

Spanning 24km long, the new Second Penang Bridge will not only become the longest bridge in Southeast Asia, but the first seismically bridge in the world. Upon completion, the Second Penang Bridge is expected to reduce high vehicles congestion connecting between the mainland and the island..
