UEM Builders Berhad participated in the first Brunei International Health, Safety and Environment Conference & Exhibition 2013 (BIHSE 2013) held on 2 and 3 July 2013 at the Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club, Jerudong.

Themed “Building a Common Future in Health, Safety and Environment through Global Responses”, the event was officiated by Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato’ Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, Minister of Development.

This conference aimed at highlighting and creating more awareness on Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) at the workplace. It also served as an opportunity to learn from the experiences and knowledge on HSE shared by invited speakers as this could be used as a guide for implementation or improvement of HSE policy or HSE related matters in Brunei.

Around 200 participants, comprising employees from both government and private agencies who are safety managers, engineers or whose work involved going into construction sites, attended the conference. Talks were delivered by speakers from Australia, US, Singapore, Philippines, India, Malaysia and from Brunei Labour Department and Ministry of Health.

Zulkefli Harun, our Head of HSE delivered a talk on “Inculcating an Effective Health and Safety Culture within the Organisation and at Project Sites”. His talk focused on the importance of conducting periodic and ad hoc inspections to identify and prevent work-related accidents. He also touched on the planning for safety measures ranging from identifying hazards, assessing risks, implementing standards of performance, developing a positive culture to control risks.

At present, UEM Builders is involved in the construction of 4,000 units of double semi-detached and double storey terrace houses for the Brunei National Housing Scheme at Mengkubau, Mukim Mentiri.
